What to do

In life, in a year, in a minute, in a second, we are constantly looking ahead as humans. We obsess over the destinantion while ignoring the journey.

We are told to “Enjoy the journey, it’s not about the destination”.

But I think we have misunderstood this phrase.

People assume enjoy means smiles, laughter, fun, and excitement every step of the way.

That’s not real. Never has been, never will be.

The man training tirelessly for a marathon isnt laughing throughout their 10 mile run. They aren’t smiling and skipping with every step of the way.

But yet…. they are enjoying it.

Enjoyment not in the miles run or because it feels good. It’s because it means something.

Enjoyment of this type is not found in pleasure but in progress.

It’s knowing that all this pain is building towards something. It’s in watching yourself become stronger. It’s in earning that finish line.

Most people quit because they expect the journey to be fun. So when it is hard they believe something is wrong.

Nothing is wrong

It is supposed to be hard.

The real shift in life is when you stop chasing fun, and you start chasing meaning. This is when you realize the work itself is the reward. That you can be tired, uncomfortable or even miserable and still be deeply satisfied.

A happily miserable person as they call it.

The question isn’t what to do.

You have always known what to do.

The question is, when are you going to do it.
